A session usually lasts 50 minutes, although longer sessions might be considered useful. Weekly sessions are generally recommended, though the severity of the issue(s) may require more frequent sessions in the initial stages. Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the counseling session (aka homework); such as reading a relevant article/book, undertaking an assigned task, or keeping notes (journaling). For the counseling to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the counseling sessions. The answer to the question is you can expect empathy, respect, specificity, and genuineness.
The benefits of counseling are directly tied to the willingness on your part to put forth effort toward making the change(s) needed to foster positive growth. Counseling takes work, requires change, is a process, demands honesty, and is not easy. It is helpful to know and have someone who is understanding, supportive and nonjudgemental in your corner as you undertake this journey. Counseling can provide a fresh perspective pushing the dynamic toward exploration, understanding, action, and learning in a safe, secure, confidential environment; as you endeavor to find direction and/or solutions to the issue(s) at the core. The benefits you obtain from counseling depend on how well you engage in the process and how willing you are to put into practice what you learn. Most who complete counseling do so with a new invigorating sense of self-worth and personal strength. The hard work is worth the reward!
